Rittal and IBM integrate energy management

Using IT resources cost-effectively

09.03.2010 IBM Deutschland Research & Development GmbH and Rittal, the system provider for IT infrastructure, have integrated their energy management solutions in the IBM Active Energy Manager.

The resulting modular solution allows the energy consumption of individual IT components to be analysed and evaluated. This provides the basis for energy-efficient and thus cost-effective data centre operation. At Cebit, the partners are presenting the solution for the first time at Rittal's stand (E06) in Hall 11.

IBM Deutschland Research & Development GmbH and Rittal, the system provider for IT infrastructure, have integrated their energy management solutions in the IBM Active Energy Manager.

In 2010, energy efficiency remains one of the most important data centre issues. As before, many operators lack adequate tools for effectively recording each component's consumption and for efficiently allocating the available IT resources. Linking IT equipment (servers, storage, etc.) and the IT infrastructure to climate control and power distribution represents a major problem. Without this interlinking, no continuous data centre optimisation is possible. Through the integration of the energy management solution from Rittal in the IBM Active Energy Manager data centre, operators will be able to record the power consumption of their individual IT components in future, and also assign each of them to infrastructure services.

The interaction of diagnosis and management

Rittal's CMC-TC monitoring system allocates the various IT devices to the PSM (Power System Module) intelligent busbars. These incorporate built-in sensors that measure the individual cable outlets to the sockets. Through an interface, the CMC-TC forwards these and any other relevant parameters to the IBM Active Energy Manager. The monitoring capabilities of IBM's software enables data centre operators to make an all-encompassing trend analyses and evaluations, and optimise their equipment's energy consumption.
IBM Deutschland Research & Development has been employing the newly developed solution in its own data centres since December 2009, and has so been able to cut the energy needed for cooling considerably. At Cebit, the two companies will be exhibiting the solution together for the first time at Rittal's stand in Hall 11 (E06).
