New EMC fan-and-filter units from Rittal

Improved HF shielding thanks to new EMC fan-and-filter units

07.12.2011 EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) enclosures that have high HF (high-frequency) shielding need to be air-conditioned by fan-and-filter units, and in this case special EMC fan-and-filter units should be used. The new EMC fan-and-filter units from Rittal now offer significantly improved shielding or attenuation of electromagnetic fields and thus higher EMC safety. The new development, which has the advantages of the TopTherm fan-and-filter unit series such as high pressure stability and easy mounting, meets the requirements of performance category 2 for screening attenuation according to EN61587-3:2006 in the frequency range of 30 to 1,000 MHz.

The new EMC fan-and-filter units from Rittal have significantly improved shielding or attenuation of electromagnetic fields and thus higher EMC safety.

Electric and magnetic fields, which can quickly lead to malfunctions, are everywhere - from industrial applications to data communication and telecommunications. If switchgear or IT applications are exposed to extremely high electromagnetic interference fields, special EMC enclosures with high HF shielding are used. In order to ensure the stability of EMC also when cooling with fan-and-filter units, special EMC fan-and-filter units are a must. Rittal now offers a clear improvement in shielding and attenuation with the newly developed EMC fan-and-filter unit series.

What is new is that the entire fan unit - consisting of housing and filter mat - is designed for optimal EMC protection. Although until now special EMC wire gratings were necessary for shielding, users can do without them in the future. The manufacturer achieves significantly improved shielding or attenuation by means of metallised surfaces, both of the filter housings as well as of the filter mats, with copper-nickel-chrome coatings. The EMC fan-and-filter units from Rittal thus meet the requirements of performance level 2 according to EN61587-3:2006. They establish a minimum attenuation of 40 dB for the frequency range of 30 to 230 MHz and 30 dB for the frequency range of 230 to 1,000 MHz.
The fan-and-filter units can be easily clipped into the corresponding mounting cut-out on the enclosure or housing and bolted down. Attachment of a self-adhesive circumferential contact film additionally ensures reliable and comprehensive securing of the fan-and-filter unit to the inside of the enclosure or housing.

Like the current TopTherm fan-and-filter unit series from Rittal, the new EMC fan-and-filter units from Rittal also have a high-pressure diagonal fan technology - a synthesis of radial and axial fan technology - and a fan output range of 20 to 900 m3/h. By default, the protection categories range from IP 51 (900 m3/h) to IP 54.
