Rittal: a strong partner at Frankfurt airport

New construction projects at "Fraport": packed with system technology from Rittal

12.09.2011 Up to 180,000 passengers pass through Frankfurt airport every day, making it a global hub for international air traffic. The key preconditions for trouble-free operation of the technical infrastructure - from baggage handling to air traffic control - are high availability IT and automation systems. For years, operating company Fraport AG has relied on system solutions from Rittal in the fields of IT infrastructure, automation and switchgear in all sectors of the airport. Currently it is turning to Rittal in relation to new construction projects such as the northwest runway, Gate A-Plus and the DFS-Tower.

In the new DFS-Tower, IT systems such as LAN nodes and servers, fire alarm systems, access control systems, wireless and video technology, as well as a variety of air traffic control systems are safely contained in housings and enclosures from Rittal.

Fraport AG is the owner and operator of Frankfurt airport and one of the top international companies in the airport business. The airport, where over 71,000 people are employed, represents the largest single workplace in Germany. "In July this year, for the first time, Fraport AG recorded more than 5.5 million passenger movements - more than in any other month so far. As operators of Frankfurt airport, this calls for a high degree of logistical and technological expertise on our part. So strong partners like Rittal are of great importance for us", emphasised Dr. Ulrich Kipper, Head of the Services Division of Fraport AG's Central Infrastructure Management.

In order to keep up with the growing passenger numbers, Fraport AG is currently expanding its capacity at Frankfurt Airport. This year sees Germany's largest airport making use of its new northwest runway, which is expected to increase capacity by half. In order to meet the high requirements of the local security concept, Fraport AG turns to systems solutions from Rittal for the technical equipment it needs: in the case of the new (and for the first time CO2-neutral) "Fire Station 4" building, this means all the beacon systems, the advanced video surveillance system for the fences and road tunnels, as well as the rainwater retention basins. The technologies offered by Rittal range from enclosures and outdoor enclosures to power supply and cooling technology, and include IT solutions like network and server racks and UPS (uninterrupted power supply) systems.

The construction of the 790-metre long Gate A-Plus in the west of Terminal 1 means that Fraport AG is taking a further step towards ensuring the future viability of the airport. Providing terminal places for wide-bodied aircraft - in particular for four giant A380 jets - represents a key success factor. The features of new terminal include a state-of-the-art baggage transport system running along the length of the terminal, as well the new climate control centres and the establishment of a completely new IT infrastructure. In order to protect the control and power distribution equipment in the baggage transport system, more than 500 Rittal enclosures of the CM and AE series and over 100 TS 8 enclosures and cooling units have been installed. Likewise, fire alarm systems, access control systems, control systems for building automation, and IT systems such as high-performance servers in housing and enclosure solutions from Rittal are also safely "packaged".

Another new project on the Fraport AG site is the 70-metre high DFS Tower near the new northwest landing strip. This control tower, equipped with the latest technology, is crammed full of solutions from Rittal. IT systems such as LAN nodes and servers, fire alarm systems, access control systems, wireless and video technology, as well as a variety of air traffic control systems are safely contained in housings and enclosures from Rittal. Appropriate climate control solutions also ensure optimal climate conditions for the electronic circuitry installed in the enclosures.

All in all, solutions from Rittal can be found in all sectors of Frankfurt airport - the airlines, air traffic control, cargo service providers, and the global suppliers to the international aerospace industry and at Fraport AG itself. Besides this, the company serves every major airport worldwide with its comprehensive "Rittal - The System." range.
